Israel Adesanya’s foray into the UFC light heavyweight division sparked talk of a potential dream fight with Jon Jones, the longtime light-heavyweight star who is moving up to heavyweight.
But Adesanya’s bid to become the UFC’s latest double champion fell short Saturday at UFC 259 as the middleweight champion lost to light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz, his first career MMA loss (20-1.)
Jones called out Adesanya after the loss and shut down any talk of a fight between the two.
“Yeah never mind, that’s not even worth my time,” Jones wrote on Twitter.
Adesanya called Blachowicz “a classy champion” and “a cool dude.”
“If I was gonna lose to anyone, I’m glad it was him,” Adesanya said.
That drew another reaction from Jones on Instagram.
“I’m glad to lose? Yeah this kid didn’t want any problems, learned so much tonight,” Jones said.
But Adesanya said “never say never” when it comes to a possible matchup with Jones.
UFC president Dana White said Adesanya should focus on middleweight now, but Adesanya said he “definitely” wants to fight at 205 pounds again.
