Giants sign G Zach Fulton

The Giants added playmakers on offense this offseason, most notably receiver Kenny Golladay and tight end Kyle Rudolph, but did not address their offensive line, until Thursday, when they signed Zach Fulton, a veteran guard added for depth and to compete for a starting job.

Fulton, 29, has 107 games and 90 starts on his NFL résumé. He started all 16 games at right guard for the Texans in 2020 and has 65 starts at right guard in his seven-year career, the first four years with the Chiefs and the past three seasons with the Texans. The Giants have a vacancy at right guard, where Kevin Zeitler started the past two seasons before he was released March 11 in a salary dump that saved the Giants $12 million on the salary cap.

With Shane Lemieux heading into his second year and Will Hernandez moving into his fourth season, the Giants needed additional experience at guard. Lemieux as a rookie started nine games at left guard, first subbing for Hernandez when Hernandez missed two games on the COVID-19 list and later as the permanent replacement.

Lemieux will get the chance to stay put as the starting left guard. Hernandez fell out of favor with the current Giants coaching staff and, with Fulton now on the roster, will have his work cut out for him to regain a starting role.

Fulton, though, has not played as consistently as Zeitler. Fulton last season allowed 11 sacks — the most of any guard in the league — and 39 total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. Zeitler in 2020 allowed four sacks and 28 total pressures. He signed a three-year contract with the Ravens worth $22.5 million.

The Texans released Fulton on March 15, saving $3 million on the salary cap. In March 2018, they signed Fulton to a four-year deal worth $28 million, and he started 44 games the past three seasons. Fulton in his career also has 16 starts at left guard and nine starts at center. He played in 16 games four times in his seven years.

The 6-foot-5, 321-pound Fulton was a 2014 sixth-round draft pick of the Chiefs out of Tennessee. He started all 16 games as a rookie.

The Giants are set with Andrew Thomas at left tackle and Nick Gates at center. They re-signed veteran Nate Solder as a swing tackle and to compete with Matt Peart, entering his second season, at right tackle. Lemieux will get a long look at one starting guard role and now Fulton is on the scene to try to claim another guard spot.
