Devils clip Sabres to snap ugly home skid

[ad_1]

Miles Wood deflected in a shot for his tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the New Jersey Devils snapped an 11-game home losing streak by extending the Buffalo Sabres’ overall skid to 12 in a row with Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory at Newark, N.J.

With New Jersey on the power play, Buffalo native Wood stood untouched in front of the net and redirected home Jesper Bratt’s shot past Sabres goaltender Jonas Johansson to break a 2-2 tie 4:52 into the final period. Four of Wood’s nine goals this season have come against Buffalo.

Yegor Sharangovich and Sami Vatanen also scored, and MacKenzie Blackwood (33 saves) made some key late stops to help end the Devils’ franchise-worst 0-10-1 home slide. It’s just the third win at home this season for New Jersey, which won for the third time in its last 15 games overall.

Tobias Rieder and Jeff Skinner scored second-period goals for reeling Buffalo, which is 0-10-2 since winning 4-1 at New Jersey on Feb. 23.

Unlike Monday’s 6-0 loss to Washington when the Sabres managed just two shots on goal in the first period, they outshot New Jersey 12-5 through the first 20 minutes. Yet, it was the Devils who opened the scoring through Sharangovich’s wrister from the slot with 2:20 left in the opening frame.

The Sabres, however, leveled the contest 6:13 into the second by ending a goal drought that spanned more than eight periods. On the pursuit, Rieder rang the post for his fifth goal of the year. It was 57 seconds later that Skinner went forehand-backhand to beat Blackwood and give Buffalo a 2-1 lead.

New Jersey, though, tied it at 2-2 with 9:21 left in the second period. Veteran defenseman Vatanen unleashed a wobbling wrist shot from the low slot to beat Johansson (24 saves) for his first goal of the season.
